Waxing Care: Setting the Stage For Smooth and Soothed Skin

Wading into the waters of waxing can be an exhilarating one.

“Finally,” you might think, “I can leave shaving and tweezing in the past where they belong!”

In the span of one session, all of your isolated hair-related woes are removed with the flick of a wrist. Congratulations, and welcome to the world of waxing benefits!

That being said, first-time waxers might not know how best to care for their skin both before and after their session. And that’s why we’re here to present our three primary tips to know prior to your waxing appointment:

Perform an Allergy Test

If you have sensitive skin or are otherwise unsure of how your skin will react to waxing, it’s important to perform a test as well as consult your dermatologist. Not only will your dermatologist be able to help you navigate the world of waxing and what your skin can handle, but by using a test strip on a small patch of skin 24 hours before your appointment, you can better determine how and whether your body will react.

Particularly if this is your first waxing treatment, this practice will save you from any unwelcome post-session surprises.

Prepare the Skin Itself

Before you show up for your waxing appointment, it’s important to prep your skin so that you are able to reap the full benefits of your session. Specifically, be sure to exfoliate at least the day prior. By exfoliating the waxing site, you’ll remove any dead skin cells that would otherwise block the hair, thereby ensuring that they will be caught by the wax and removed as expected.

Additionally, do not shave before your waxing appointment, as tempting as it may be. Your hair should be, at minimum, about a quarter of an inch long to be effectively picked up and removed by the waxing process.

Follow Proper Aftercare

After your waxing session, your skin will be sensitive and apt to develop ingrown hairs, which is why aftercare is so important. For one, do not schedule another waxing session for several weeks, as waxing the same site too soon can damage the skin.

Otherwise, be sure to use serums for ingrown hairs and increased moisture. Also, continue exfoliating and using gentle lotions between sessions to ensure both proper hydration and softness, as this will render future waxing appointments less painful.
